An abundance of shopping opportunities in Calais is making the entire town one big shopping centre
Rue Royal, Calais’ popular shopping street has been greatly modernised over the last few years. New bars have opened up and the stylish shopping inlet, Passage Royal has been created. Inside there’s a range of small boutiques and a café bars.
If you like to dine from fine porcelain, drink from crystal and adorn your home with fine decorative designer items, here is a tip: stylish Lalique and Baccarat crystal, items made by Christophle, porcelain from Royale de Limoges and Versace dinner sets are available at René Classe at 61 Rue Royale. They cost between 20-33% less than normal UK prices! For instance a Villeroy & Bosch 26cm dinner plate costs £12.34 here and £23.40 in the UK and a Lalique Crystal Bacchante costs £1,579.16 here and £1,999 in the UK!
Anyone for tea? Around 70 varieties can be purchased at Brulerie La Tour at 65 rue Royale. In fact everything you could wish for to enjoy a cuppa is available on their shelves including pretty tea sets, and a range of tempting chocolates and biscuits. Au Royal Chocolat at number 67 is a quaint, little chocolate shop. On sale is ‘Les Coucougnettes’ awarded the ‘Best Speciality Sweet in France’ by the Salon International de La Confiseries Paris. They were enjoyed by King Henry IV and If you like marzipan, you will love them. A bag of Les Coucougnettes costs around £7.00. Also on sale are a range of Daskalides Belgian chocolates. You would never know it, but they are sugar free! 100g costs around £2.00.
The Living Centre
The area around Boulevard Jacquard and Boulevard Lafayette is currently being renovated to create a new shopping centre called 'The Living Centre'. It comprises two buildings linked together by a glass covered square. The first building will contain 50 independent retail outlets including H&M and the second a Champion supermarket and a large off licence. It is scheduled to open this year.
